South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, left for Mexico on Monday after visa complications delayed their departure by a day, disrupting final preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The squad had been scheduled to travel from Johannesburg on Sunday, May 31, but was held back after several players and members of the delegation were still awaiting visas required for travel through the United States en route to Mexico.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed that the issue forced a postponement of the charter flight while urgent administrative and diplomatic interventions were carried out to clear outstanding applications.

The team eventually departed on June 1, but not with its full technical complement. Assistant coach Helman Mkhalele did not travel after his U.S. visa application was denied without explanation, according to officials familiar with the situation. Other staff members were also reported to be awaiting final clearance at the time of departure.

The disruption has reduced South Africa’s preparation window ahead of its opening World Cup fixture against hosts Mexico on June 11 in Mexico City. Head coach Hugo Broos had planned an early arrival in Mexico to allow players time to adapt to altitude conditions and finalise tactical preparations.

Instead, the team now faces a compressed schedule, including a warm-up match against Jamaica before the tournament begins, with less time for structured training in similar environmental conditions.

Sports authorities in South Africa have described the situation as an administrative failure and have called for internal review processes, while SAFA has maintained that efforts were made to resolve the visa backlog as quickly as possible.

The incident adds to growing concerns around travel logistics in the expanded 48-team World Cup format, where teams must navigate multiple immigration systems across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, often under tight pre-tournament timelines.

South Africa is now in Mexico and is expected to begin full training immediately as attention shifts from travel disruption to final tournament preparation.
