South Africa’s government has said that perceptions linked to xenophobia are beginning to carry consequences for the country’s cultural and commercial presence across Africa, as officials respond to renewed scrutiny over violence against foreign nationals at home.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said in remarks reported on 15 June 2026 that South African artists are starting to encounter reduced opportunities in parts of the continent, while businesses operating across African markets are also experiencing challenges connected to perceptions of xenophobia in South Africa.

Kubayi framed the issue as a growing reputational concern, arguing that repeated incidents of violence and hostility toward foreign nationals risk affecting how South Africa is perceived regionally. The comments were delivered during a government briefing in Pretoria, according to reports.

However, no specific cases of cancelled performances, coordinated boycotts, or measurable economic losses were provided in the minister’s remarks or in initial reporting. The statement focused instead on emerging concerns and anecdotal signals rather than documented incidents or quantified impact.

The government has in recent years faced recurring diplomatic and public relations pressure following outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence in parts of the country. These incidents have periodically strained relations with neighbouring states and drawn criticism from civil society groups across the continent.

Kubayi’s comments reflect a broader official acknowledgement that such tensions are not only a domestic governance issue but also carry implications for South Africa’s regional image and soft power. Authorities have not announced any formal assessment of economic damage linked to the phenomenon.

While the warning underscores concern within Pretoria about perception-driven consequences, the extent and scale of any impact on artists or businesses across Africa remains unverified.
