Heavy rainfall has triggered flooding in several parts of Kenya, affecting transport, homes and businesses in some areas. The capital, Nairobi, has been among the hardest hit, with flooded roads causing major traffic disruptions.

In many neighborhoods, stormwater quickly filled streets after drainage systems became overwhelmed. Vehicles were forced to slow down or stop completely as water covered some roads, while pedestrians struggled to move through flooded areas.

Authorities say the floods are linked to intense rainfall during the early stages of the region’s rainy season. Meteorological officials have warned that continued downpours could raise the risk of more flooding, especially in low-lying areas and locations near rivers.

Emergency teams have urged residents to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, as water levels can rise suddenly and pose safety risks.

Flooding is a recurring challenge in Nairobi during heavy rains, partly due to blocked drainage systems, rapid urban growth and construction in flood-prone areas. Local authorities say improving drainage and waste management will be key to reducing the impact of floods in the future.
