It\u2019s become a reflex, a shield, a pause, a way to avoid questions we\u2019re not ready to answer.<\/p>\n
And most of the time, we accept it.<\/p>\n
The hardest part isn\u2019t always what someone is going through.
\nIt\u2019s how close you can see them almost every day and still not understand what you\u2019re looking at.
\nOr maybe you do, but you don\u2019t have the words yet.<\/p>\n
They didn\u2019t change all at once.
\nIt was small things.
\nThey laughed but not like they used to.
\nThey were there but quieter, holding something back.
\nThey still greeted everyone. Still showed up. Still said, \u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d
\nAnd I nodded.
\nWhere I come from, people don\u2019t always say when something is wrong. You don\u2019t press. You don\u2019t want to seem intrusive. So you accept it.<\/p>\n
It shows up in ways that are easy to dismiss.
\nThey sit with everyone but speak less.
\nThey drift out of conversations and return like nothing happened.
\nThey pause too long before answering simple questions.
\nBut sometimes it looks different.
\nSometimes it comes out sharp.
\nShort tempers. Snap reactions. Irritations that don\u2019t match the moment.
\nNot because they\u2019re angry at you because the weight inside has nowhere else to go.
\nOther times, it\u2019s overcompensation.
\nTalking more than usual, filling every silence.
\nJoking louder. Laughing harder. Staying just a little too busy.
\nChecking on everyone else, making sure no one notices them.
\nAnd then there are the in-between moments.
\nEmotional, unexplained shifts. Sudden withdrawal. A smile that doesn\u2019t reach the eyes.
\nSmall behaviors that don\u2019t scream \u201chelp,\u201d but quietly ask for it.
\nYou notice it slowly.
\nNot enough to name it.
\nBut enough that it stays with you.<\/p>\n
I used to think that if something was wrong, it would be obvious.
\nThat someone would say something. Or someone older would notice.
\nBut it hides in routine. In showing up. In \u201csee you tomorrow\u201d said like any other day.
\nAnd then there\u2019s that feeling the quiet one you can\u2019t prove.
\nThe sense that something isn\u2019t right.
\nBut you hesitate.
\nYou don\u2019t want to embarrass them. You don\u2019t want to cross a line. You don\u2019t want to ask a question you\u2019re not prepared to answer.
\nSo you let it pass. And they keep saying, \u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
Where I come from, strength often looks like silence.
\nWe learn early not to burden others. To endure, to show up, to keep going.
\nFrom the outside, it looks like resilience.
\nBut sometimes, it\u2019s just loneliness that has learned to hide.<\/p>\n
Looking back, I think about the chances I had to ask differently.
\nNot just \u201care you okay?\u201d in passing but stopping. Sitting. Asking in a way that makes space for the truth, even if it\u2019s messy.
\nBecause sometimes people don\u2019t need solutions.
\nThey need permission.
\nPermission to not have the right words.
\nPermission to say something incomplete.
\nPermission to set down what they\u2019ve been carrying even if only for a moment.<\/p>\n
There wasn\u2019t a single moment when it became serious.
\nJust a slow shift from \u201cthey\u2019ve been quiet lately\u201d to something heavier than I wanted to admit.
\nSomething deeper. Something harder to ignore.
\nWhat I know now:
\nSilence can look like strength.
\n\u201cI\u2019m fine\u201d can mean, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to say this out loud.\u201d
\nWe don\u2019t need perfect words.
\nWe need to stop accepting \u201cI\u2019m fine\u201d as the end of the conversation.
\nSometimes it\u2019s enough to stay a little longer. To ask again. To sit without rushing.
\nNot to fix anything. Just to make it harder for someone to carry everything alone.
\nBecause people don\u2019t always open up when you ask.
