Burkina Faso Introduces New Charter to Guide Government

Burkina Faso’s transitional parliament has officially approved a new document called the Charte de la Révolution (“Charter of the Revolution”). The vote on Friday was unanimous. This new charter replaces the previous Charter of the Transition and sets out the rules for how the country will be run under Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

The charter lays out the main principles and organization of the government during this period. It reflects the vision of Traoré’s Progressive and Popular Revolution, a plan for running the country that he has promoted since 2025. By approving it, the government now has a clear legal framework for leadership and decision-making.

Some of the key changes include new names for government bodies. The Transitional Legislative Assembly is now called the People’s Legislative Assembly, and the government of transition is now officially called simply the government. These changes remove references to a “transition,” signaling a more structured system.

Political representation has also been updated. Political parties no longer play a role in the legislature. Instead, representatives are selected based on regions and territories. This aligns with laws passed earlier that dissolved all political parties in the country.

The charter also changes rules for future elections. Captain Traoré is now officially allowed to run in elections once the revolutionary period ends, a shift from previous restrictions under the transition rules.
Overall, the Charte de la Révolution sets the country’s direction for the coming years. It defines how the government will function, how representation works, and how the leadership’s vision will guide Burkina Faso during this period.
