Qatar is mourning the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, a leader whose three-decade influence helped reshape the Gulf nation’s economy, international profile, and diplomatic role.

Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, died at the age of 74. Qatar’s Amiri Diwan announced his passing as the country entered a period of national mourning.

During his leadership, Qatar experienced rapid growth driven by its natural gas industry, becoming one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). His era also saw major investments in infrastructure, education, sports, media, and global partnerships.

Under Sheikh Hamad’s rule, Qatar expanded its international presence through initiatives including the growth of Al Jazeera, the rise of Qatar Airways, and major global investments. The country also secured the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, placing Qatar at the centre of global sports attention.

Leaders Across the World Send Condolences

Tributes have come from governments and leaders around the world, with many describing Sheikh Hamad as a visionary figure who changed Qatar’s position in global affairs.

Regional leaders, including those from Gulf countries, expressed condolences to Qatar’s leadership and the Al Thani family, highlighting his role in strengthening regional relations.

African leaders and institutions also recognised Qatar’s growing partnerships with the continent during his leadership, particularly in areas such as investment, infrastructure, diplomacy, and development cooperation.

International figures praised his role in mediation efforts and Qatar’s emergence as a diplomatic player involved in major global discussions.

A Legacy That Changed Qatar’s Future

Supporters of Sheikh Hamad remember him as the architect of modern Qatar, pointing to the country’s economic transformation and increased global influence during his time in power.

His leadership also remains a subject of international debate, with discussions surrounding Qatar’s foreign policy, regional influence, and rapid global expansion.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marking a transition to a new generation of leadership.

Today, Qatar continues to reflect the foundations built during Sheikh Hamad’s rule, a country with significant influence in energy, investment, diplomacy, and global affairs.
