A Linda Mwananchi rally at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega faced disruptions on Saturday when police deployed tear gas as supporters gathered for the event. The rally is part of a nationwide tour led by Senator Edwin Sifuna and allied leaders, including Babu Owino, aiming to engage citizens on governance and community issues.
Thousands of attendees had assembled by mid-morning when tear gas canisters were fired into the crowd, causing temporary panic and forcing some participants to move for safety. Videos and reports from the scene showed white smoke spreading through parts of the venue, with some attendees responding by regrouping and resisting displacement.
Despite the disruption, Sifuna addressed the crowd, urging calm and instructing supporters not to retaliate or flee. Organisers emphasized that the tour would continue as planned and that political mobilisation efforts would not be deterred by the disturbances.
Police had reportedly not received formal notification of the rally, prompting heightened security measures and roadblocks in Kakamega town. Observers noted a strong police presence around Amalemba Grounds throughout the day.
The Linda Mwananchi Tour has previously held stops in other counties, including Busia and Kitengela, drawing thousands of citizens to engage directly with political leaders on daily concerns and party positions ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Despite the tense start, organisers said the rally would proceed and continue to focus on outreach, citizen engagement, and strengthening grassroots participation in political processes.
