In a shocking and rare incident at Uganda’s Kiboga Central Prison, three people, including two senior prison officers, were shot dead on Monday morning. The unprecedented attack has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about security within the Uganda Prisons Service.

According to police reports, the suspect, identified as Warder Moses Anguyo, allegedly opened fire inside the prison at around 10 a.m. local time. Those killed included Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, Principal Officer Bright Akishuri, and Sarah Ayebare, the spouse of the Officer in Charge.
Eyewitnesses said the attack followed a confrontation over alleged phone use by the warder during duty hours. After the shootings, Anguyo reportedly fled the prison, discarding his uniform in an attempt to evade authorities.

Security forces immediately launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large. The firearm used in the attack has been recovered, and prison officials have increased security measures in the facility. Authorities are appealing to the public for information that could lead to his capture.

The Uganda Prisons Service described the incident as “rare and unprecedented,” highlighting the danger faced by prison officers even in seemingly routine settings. Analysts say that such incidents, while uncommon, underscore the ongoing challenges of maintaining order in high-security facilities across the country.

Local residents in Kiboga District described Monday’s events as “terrifying,” with families and staff still grappling with the aftermath. Hospitals nearby received those injured in the chaos, and police continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
