Kenya’s golf scene has a new reason to celebrate. Njoroge Kibugu, 22, turned heads at the 2026 Magical Kenya Open Presented by Absa, held at Nairobi’s Karen Country Club from February 19 to 22, proving that Kenyan golfers can compete on the global stage.
Kibugu was the only Kenyan player to make the cut in a tournament stacked with international talent from the DP World Tour. He finished tied for 61st place overall at six under par, closing the tournament with an impressive five‑under‑par 65 on the final day. His steady play and clutch birdies thrilled local fans and demonstrated a level of composure rarely seen from a player so early in his professional career.
While South African Casey Jarvis captured the title with a commanding lead, Kibugu’s performance was the highlight for Kenya. It earned him recognition at the highest levels as President William Ruto awarded him KSh 5 million, and Absa Bank Kenya contributed an additional KSh 2 million to support his rising career.
Kibugu’s rise is the result of years of hard work on the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing, where he consistently challenged top regional talent. His breakthrough at the Magical Kenya Open is a milestone not just for him, but for Kenyan golf as a whole, showing that local players can compete alongside seasoned international professionals.
For young athletes across Kenya and East Africa, Kibugu’s performance is inspiring proof that dedication, skill, and focus can open doors to international competition.
