In Ziguinchor, southern Senegal, authorities have dismantled a suspected cross-border trafficking operation involving Nigerian nationals accused of exploiting young women through fake job offers.
Victims were reportedly promised legitimate employment abroad but were transported across borders and placed in controlled living conditions, where they faced sexual exploitation and debt-based restrictions. Investigators say this method reflects a growing trend in West Africa, where recruiters capitalize on youth unemployment and the desire for overseas opportunities.
These schemes typically begin with recruiters offering jobs abroad, sometimes covering travel and accommodation upfront. Once victims arrive, the “expenses” are converted into debt, forcing them into exploitative conditions with limited freedom. Informal migration routes and unverified job offers continue to make young people vulnerable to these criminal networks.
