Demonstrations, celebrations, and policy calls highlight women’s rights and achievements worldwide

March 8, 2026 — Countries across Africa, Europe, and other regions marked International Women’s Day with demonstrations, awards, conferences, and cultural celebrations calling for gender equality and recognition of women’s achievements.

Across the world, activists and civil society groups held marches and rallies demanding equal pay, protection from violence, and broader political representation for women. The day also featured recognition programs honoring influential women in leadership, business, science, and culture.

In Europe, thousands joined feminist marches and demonstrations, including major rallies in cities such as Paris where activists gathered to highlight gender inequality and social justice issues affecting women.
Across Africa, organizations and media networks celebrated women’s leadership and achievements. One major initiative highlighted 100 influential African women shaping the continent’s future across sectors including governance, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Governments and regional institutions also issued official statements reaffirming commitments to gender equality and stronger legal protections for women and girls, emphasizing justice, rights, and empowerment across the continent.

Beyond political activism, the day included cultural programs, exhibitions, conferences, and educational events celebrating women’s contributions to society and encouraging young girls to pursue leadership roles and careers in science, technology, and public service.
