In a bizarre wildlife-smuggling case, a man was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, Kenya after attempting to smuggle over 2,200 live ants out of the country. The 27-year-old Chinese national, Zhang Kequn, had hidden 1,948 of the ants in test tubes and wrapped the remaining insects in tissue paper inside his luggage.

Authorities say these were queen garden ants, highly prized in the exotic pet and hobbyist market. Queen ants are essential for starting new colonies in formicariums, small controlled habitats where collectors watch ants build tunnels, gather food, and raise offspring. Some ants are also sold to researchers or educational programs, but the quantity smuggled in this case strongly indicates they were intended for international resale.

Zhang was arrested on March 10, 2026, and authorities have seized his devices to investigate whether he is part of a larger ant-trafficking network. Kenya has previously seen cases of insect smuggling, and officials say even small animals like ants can have significant ecological impacts if removed from their natural habitat.

This arrest highlights the growing international demand for exotic insects and the risks they pose to local biodiversity. Smuggling live animals, even tiny ants, is illegal under Kenya’s wildlife protection laws, and authorities warn that offenders can face serious legal consequences.
