Ugandan opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, announced on 14 March 2026 that he has temporarily left Uganda to engage international partners and advocate for political reforms.
The leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) said the decision comes amid heightened political pressure following the January 2026 presidential election, whose outcome he and his supporters dispute.
Kyagulanyi stated that the trip abroad will allow him to meet international leaders, democracy advocates, and human-rights organizations to raise concerns about Uganda’s political environment.
The election was officially won by incumbent president Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the country since 1986. Opposition figures, including Kyagulanyi, alleged electoral irregularities, intimidation of supporters, and arrests of activists during and after the vote.
According to Kyagulanyi, security pressure and restrictions on opposition activities made it difficult for him to continue political mobilization effectively inside the country.
Despite leaving Uganda, he emphasized that the move is temporary and that he plans to return after completing international engagements aimed at strengthening support for democratic governance.
The announcement has triggered mixed reactions across Uganda’s political landscape, with supporters welcoming the strategy to internationalize the opposition’s cause, while government allies dismiss the claims of political repression.
