Tigray Rebels Return to the Spotlight in Northern Ethiopia

Tensions rise as clashes flare in a region still recovering from war.

Ethiopia’s Tigray region is facing a fresh wave of tension as the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the main rebel group, warns the federal government against renewed military action.

The TPLF led a brutal civil war with the Ethiopian government from 2020 to 2022. That conflict displaced millions, destroyed communities, and left the region struggling to recover. Although a peace agreement officially ended the war, disputes over governance, autonomy, and security have reignited clashes.

Since early 2026, skirmishes and troop movements have been reported in northern towns, with local residents describing sudden attacks and drone strikes. The rebels claim they are defending Tigray’s autonomy and resisting government overreach, while authorities accuse them of destabilizing the country.

The conflict is more than politics, it has a human toll. Thousands remain displaced, food shortages persist, and the risk of renewed widespread violence has analysts worried about wider instability across Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

Experts warn that if these tensions escalate, the fragile peace could collapse entirely, drawing the region back into open conflict. For now, both sides appear to be testing boundaries, keeping northern Ethiopia on edge.
